We were asked to develop a technique for achieving the traditional “rendered cell” look of TVC’s “The Snowman” and “Father Christmas” without having to do the labour intensive work of hand rendering crayon onto cell.
This involved splitting the animation into multiple matte runs and revealing boiling crayon textures. We also built the CGI town shot and a CGI Father Christmas, sleigh and reindeer for the animators to use as a guide for perspective and scale. Finally we covered it all in CG snow.
